Amazon.com Inc. described the 2019 holiday season as record-breaking for the company, saying billions of items were ordered on the site and “tens of millions” Amazon devices purchased world-wide.

The online retailer said Thursday that some of its best-selling products this holiday season were the Echo Dot, Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote and the Echo Show 5.

Amazon’s statement Thursday continued its annual tradition of issuing a press release the day after Christmas touting its holiday sales. The releases generally contain little comparable data to enable any meaningful analysis of the financial impact for Amazon.

Nevertheless, Amazon shares, which recently were valued about 12% below their 2019 highs from July, gained 4% in Thursday afternoon trading.

This year, Amazon said its most popular departments in the U.S. were toys, fashion, home and beauty, with more than half a billion total items ordered.

Amazon said its independent third-party sellers, mostly small and medium-size businesses, surpassed a billion items sold world-wide, with unit sales setting a record on double-digit growth from a year earlier.

In one week alone, more than 5 million new customers started free trials or became paid members of its Prime program, the company said. It didn’t give the breakdown between new paying members and those doing free trials. It also said Prime members ordered more than double the number of grocery items this holiday season compared to last year.

The company also said that this holiday season it added more than 250,000 full- and part-time seasonal roles across its global network. The Seattle-based company said it now employs 750,000 people world-wide.
