'Dancing With the Stars': Who is the new champion after nail-biting finals? - USA TODAY

Spoiler alert: The following gives details from Monday night's finale of "Dancing With the Stars."

There's a new winner in "Dancing With the Stars": Hannah Brown.

"The Bachelorette" star and her partner, Alan Bersten, defeated a field of three other couples to take home the Mirror Ball Trophy Monday night.

The field included country music singer Lauren Alaina with pro partner Gleb Savchenko; actor/comedian Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson; and pop star Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber.

Brown jumped into her partner's Bersten's arms after host Tom Bergeron announced she had won over runner-up couple Mitchell and Carson and the celebration began.

How did it happen?

The four sets of dancers performed two dances each, earning votes from viewers and judges' scores, which were weighed equally.

The first round saw Ally and Sasha zooming out to a perfect 30 for 30 from the judges with a spot-on jive. Judge Bruno Tonioli called the number "brilliant."

Lauren and Gleb followed with an admirable foxtrot. Judge Len Goodman called it a mix of "care and flare" as the dance earned straight nine scores for a 27/30.

Kel and Witney performed a jazz dance to "High School Musical: The Musical" that had the judges reaching for the 10 paddles for a 30/30 score. Goodman called Kel "the leader of the pack" with the dance.

Odds-on favorites Hannah and Alan took a surprise hit when Goodman noticed a pivotal foot mistake during the couple's opening Viennese Waltz.

"You did not notice because you were lost in the dance. But it was beautiful," said Tonioli as he and Goodman gave nine scores.

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba disagreed with her colleague's assessment. "I don’t know what you were looking at. I thought it was the best dance of the season," she said, giving the pair a perfect 10 score. But the miscue cost the couple valuable points.

The competition moved to the freestyle dance with Ally and Sasha perfecting a spirited number to "Conga" that featured one maneuver that brought Ally's legs around Sasha's hips as he played bongos on her rear end. The ecstatic judges gave straight 10 scores. (Total: 60/60)

Lauren and Gleb's freestyle "Shake It for Me" saw the country star moving her hips in a white-cowboy-booted line dance and even singing a portion of the song. Tonioli was standing by the end, calling it "absolutely delicious." Not only did Lauren earn her first 10 score of the season, she earned three. (Total: 57/60)

Hannah and Alan's freestyle to "This Girl Is on Fire" featured the "Bachelorette" star leading a pack of dancers and ending with her fist in the air. Tonioli said "from the acrobatic to the sexy, you did it all." She earned straight 10s. (Total: 58/60)

Kel and Witney finished the season's dances with a powerful freestyle to "Jump," which had the judges raving with 10 scores (except for Goodman, who gave a nine). Host Erin Andrews rebuked Goodman and called it "the best freestyle in the history of the show." (Total: 59/60)

So what happened?

All four couples waited on the dance floor for the season ending fate. Fourth place went to, Lauren and Gleb. Third place went to Ally and Sasha. That left two couples on the stage, before the winner was announced. Hannah and Alan were called the champion over runner-ups Kel and Whitney.
